What is SR-22 Insurance?
An SR-22 is a form that is filed with a state department to show that you are meeting your state's minimum auto liability insurance requirements. An SR-22 may also be referred to as a certificate of financial responsibility, or, in some states, an FR-44.
People may mistakenly refer to "SR-22 insurance." An SR-22 is not insurance — it's simply a document that proves you have insurance. Source
Who needs SR22 insurance?
The state requires SR22 filings when you have not followed the rules of the road. Several different types of violations can force you into SR22 filings, including drunk driving, reckless driving, driving without insurance, injuring someone in an at-fault accident, or even a series of small incidents that lead you to rack up too many points on your driver’s license. If you never break the traffic laws, you will never have to worry about SR22 insurance. The following violations can add up to forced SR22 insurance if you want to continue to be a licensed driver.
